Terence Rattigan’s much-loved masterpiece The Browning Version follows a retiring classics teacher at an English public school in the 1940s whose personal struggles are eased by a meaningful parting gift from a pupil. David Hare’s South Downs, purpose-written as a complementary piece, centres on a student grappling with belonging and friendship at school.

Both plays draw from the authors’ own school experiences, exploring characters challenged by emotional expression and isolation who find transformation through kindness. Rattigan spotlights the masters; Hare focuses on the pupils.
